The Top Fabrics You Should Avoid Wearing And Why

Living in a Material World, But We Are Not Material Girls

No we are not talking about Madonna’s famous track, we are talking about the modern world of fashion and the technological advances in fabrics. Not that long ago, people purchased natural fibers: cashmere, wool, cotton, hemp, and linen.

Now, clothing labels are reading like a complex recipe list of materials like rayon, polyester, acetate, nylon and acrylic. Clothing, including fashion scarves, are now chemically treated to be stain-resistant and wrinkle free! Yes, this may help make our lives simpler, but does it really?

When you start introducing synthetic clothing into your wardrobe, you are bringing in harsh chemicals that can possibly irritate your skin, and if you are buying synthetic women’s scarves, it may cause a reaction around your neck where skin in extra sensitive.

To minimize your synthetic wardrobe, avoid these fabrics:

  • Polyester – The worst fabric you can buy! Did you know it contains alcohol and terpthalic acid?
  • Acrylic - polycrylonitriles and may cause cancer, according to the EPA
  • Rayon – It contains sulphuric acid. Do you really want that touching your skin?
  • Acetate and Triacetate - made from wood fibers called cellulose and undergo extensive chemical processing to produce the finished product.
  • Nylon - made from petroleum and is often given a permanent chemical finish that can be harmful.
  • Anything static or stain resistant, permanent press, wrinkle free, or even moth repellent (Yes! That’s a thing!). These fabrics are treated with perfluorinated chemicals, like Teflon (you know like non-stick frying pans).

This isn’t to say that all fabrics, including natural fibres, don’t go under some sort of treatment. Some treatments include:

  • Detergents
  • Petrochemical dyes
  • Formaldehyde
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Dioxin-producing bleach
  • Chemical fabric softeners

Yeah, you guessed it. These additives are often toxic to our bodies, they may contain heavy metals, and they do a number on our environment.

Don’t fret, there are fabrics that are less processed, they are your natural fibers such as:

  • Cotton
  • Silk
  • Linen
  • Hemp
  • Wool
  • Cashmere

So when you are looking at where to buy clothing, look for boutiques or stores that sell organic fabrics and/or clothing. Will it be a bit more expensive? Most likely, but it’s worth the investment! Trust us, your skin will thank you!
